Introducing the CwC UniVersus Conquest League

by Dani Diaz

For some time, we have been looking for a way to spice up our normal weekly locals. We previously ran a season-based league, where you were blocked from using a character and symbol after you made top cuts with a deck featuring those elements. We would track points based on wins and placings, and at the end of the season we would have a single-elimination tournament for a chance to win a custom playmat.

This system worked very well until regionals started becoming more frequent and we all started traveling more for those events. Being locked out of a character and symbol isn’t the best for practicing before a major, and we all decided to reduce the load on the league organizer and just play whatever we liked every week.

So, of course I decided to put another thing on my plate and organize a new league. Enter, the CwC UniVersus Conquest League! The UCL will be starting this weekend on November 2nd, and we’ll be reporting all results on the website so you can follow along with all the action.

The Triple Deck Conquest Format

Triple Deck Conquest is a hybrid format that combines elements of Standard and Teams deck construction. Check out the format details below:

  • In the CwC UVCL, players will create 3 Standard Constructed decks, each with a different primary resource symbol and no sideboard. 60 card minimum, no upper limit.

  • There may be no more than 8 copies of a single card across all 3 decks. Due to the possibility of shared cards between decks, each decklist does not need to be card-complete at registration.

  • Players must make their decks match their provided decklist before presenting it to their opponent at the start of the game.

  • Matches are best of 3 games with a 60 minute time limit with a 10 minute overtime.

  • Prior to the match, players will review their opponent’s deck lists for up to 3 minutes.

  • Each player will choose one of their opponent’s decks to ban, meaning it may not be used during the match. These will be told to a third party or written down and revealed simultaneously.

  • Players will then choose and simultaneously reveal the character of the deck they will play in game 1 and decide who plays first via high roll of 2 six-sided dice. If one of the players is the reigning champion, they have the option of who plays first.

  • After game 1, the player who lost may switch decks to their other unbanned deck. They also have the option of who plays first. o The player who won must switch to their other unbanned deck.

  • If the player who lost game 1 wins game 2, both players may choose either of their unbanned decks to play in game 3.

  • In the event game 3 goes to full time in overtime, the player with the higher percentage of their maximum life total will win the match.

  • All other existing UVS Organized Play floor rules apply to the UVCL.

Determination of Initial Champion

A tournament will be held to determine who will be the first champion of the UVCL. This will be a single-elimination tournament with random bracket seeding. Triple Deck Conquest format will be used.

The winner of this tournament will be crowned the CwC UVCL Champion and their decklists will be recorded on the CwC website as well as UVSUltra.

We’re running our championship tournament THIS SUNDAY 11/2/2025! We’ll be handing out this lovely playmat that will be given from champion to champion. Each champion will sign the mat when they get it, leaving an indelible mark of their accomplishment!

Championship Title Changes

The Championship may awarded to a new player under two circumstances: a direct challenge by the UVCS points leader OR if the champion vacates the title.

Once the points leader makes a challenge, a date for the championship match will be set between the champion and the points leader. At least one other CwC member must be present to witness.

The champion must play the 3 decklists with which they won the championship. The challenger may play any three decks of their choosing. If the challenger is successful, they will hold the title for a minimum of 2 weeks before their next scheduled title defense. If the challenger is unsuccessful, they may not challenge again until at least one other challenge has been made for the title.

A champion must vacate the title if they are no longer willing or able to attend tournaments and/or defend the title.

If the title is vacated, the #1 and #2 points leaders will play a best of 3 Triple Deck Conquest match for the title.

UniVersus Conquest Leage Points System

Points will be counted after the initial championship is awarded. Players will receive points based on placing in top cuts at weekly locals. The amount of points is based on the amount of top cut placings available in that event.
