      <image:title>Articles - Worlds as a Bystander - The announcements began simply, talking about organized play the following year, that they were improving prizing. The prize wall is gonna see improvements overall, via the addition of their new in-house IP Rebel Frontier, as well as the normal types of promos (though these seem to be better chosen now as well played cards), then custom event sleeves and deck boxes if you place above a certain threshold. They talked about Local Championships (LC) and Store Scrambles as well, for the first time ever, I actually cared about LC prizing. Both cards are super playable, and VERY beautiful to look at. Also if you win your LC you get a travel voucher alongside a round 1 bye in a majors and a Worlds invite, and a travel voucher based on player counts. Genuinely, I was impressed by the intent towards prizing and rewarding players for playing this game this year. They continued on with discussing their new IP more after showing a really solid and cool trailer they had made. Then there was the final announcement… the one that made me excited more than anything else and is something i’m saving up for…. That our final set next year is INVINCIBLE. All of these announcements did one thing for me, and that was make me more excited for this year AND next year.</image:title>

      <image:title>Articles - Worlds as a Bystander</image:title>
      <image:caption>Finally there was the prereleases for Godzilla Reign of Kaiju, both of these side events were super fun! I pulled Gigan in my first sealed pool and went 1-2 overall, but all my games were very close and just relied on me pulling one more attack or checking one more successfully. It was a blast! My second kit I played Hedorah, I also went 1-2 overall here for the same exact reason. This prerelease was BY AND FAR the best feeling we have had to date. Having the limited chaff actually have effects made the game feel explosive once they were online, in this set it was a combo of access to power tokens (sacrifice for plus 2 damage) and if your opponent has cycled effects…. Whoever cycled first…. Usually lost. That alone made it feel like different gameplans and approaches were VERY possible in sealed. And i wont forget that my friend Marvin pulled me my alt Mothra in his first kit…. Then pulled her chrome in the second… All of the alt arts are SO PRETTY this set…. (thank you for that Sean Donnan).</image:caption>

      <image:title>Articles - Respect the Meta. Don’t Surrender to It.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Let’s use Atlanta Regionals 2025 as an example. I picked up Pony on Earth because it was clearly one of the strongest decks in the room. On paper, it did everything right. The numbers were there. The matchups were solid. The ceiling was obvious. In practice, it was fine. Even in the tournament, it was okay, but it felt soulless. A win didn’t really feel like a win, especially when one of my opponent’s scooped up game one and just left saying he wasn’t having fun with the game anymore.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/67da2e953669b36869a5c323/44c22678-f4c2-4b43-94fa-1056be7f70e6/KeylethAlt.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Articles - Respect the Meta. Don’t Surrender to It.</image:title>
      <image:caption>At the same time, I had a Keyleth on Earth list that I had won locals with and tested extensively. I knew that deck. I enjoyed that deck. I had real confidence in that deck, but I convinced myself that bringing the “best deck in the room” was the more sensible choice. The problem was not that Pony was bad. The problem was that I was not invested. When I lost, it was a shrug. We moved on to the next round. I started 2-1-1, fell into the draw bracket, and eventually died to control decks. Would Keyleth have performed better? Maybe. Maybe not. But I know my motivation would have been different. I would have been fighting for every round instead of just piloting something efficient. Passion matters more than we give it credit for in long tournaments.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/67da2e953669b36869a5c323/c9d4d1b4-c24f-4ad3-92b3-b09d4b7ffdb6/Jun+Kazama%2C+Light+of+Hope.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Articles - Respect the Meta. Don’t Surrender to It.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Some of my best finishes have come from decks that were not considered top tier at the time. For one example, I once played Jun on Water at a Local Championship and finished second overall. That result was not because Jun was secretly the best deck in the room. It was because I knew that deck inside and out. I knew which hands were keeps and which were traps. I knew when to slow the game down and when to push. I knew my damage thresholds and my defensive pivots. Even in matchups that were supposed to be bad, like facing Deku on Void, I felt in control. I understood my outs. I understood what I needed to see. Even in the smallest vacuum, I knew how to navigate toward a win condition because I had put in the reps.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/67da2e953669b36869a5c323/343382b8-1488-47f5-a44e-6d69efa4f87b/Ryu%2C+World+Warrior.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Articles - Respect the Meta. Don’t Surrender to It.</image:title>
      <image:caption>That kind of comfort does not show up on a tier list, and neither does experience. We have all seen it. Tim Keefe brought Ryu to Atlanta Regionals in 2025 and nearly top cut. It was not because the deck suddenly became broken. It was because Tim’s experience compresses decision making compared to the average player. Removing hesitation and letting him recognize patterns faster than the person sitting across from him. An experienced player on something slightly off-meta can navigate tight games because they have seen those board states before. They know when to pivot, when to take a risk, and when to pass the turn and live to fight another one. Meanwhile, a less experienced player on the “best deck in the room” can still stumble through sequencing simply because the reps are not there. Deck choice matters, but experience multiplies whatever deck you bring, and experience almost always comes from playing something you have truly invested time into, so the real question becomes this. If it is the “best deck,” is it automatically the deck you should be playing?</image:caption>

      <image:caption>This time would be different however. This time, I had been following the tournament results. This time, I had access to any card my heart desired. This time, I had a team! Flanked by Daniel Schussler, a character specialist who usually found himself on the Chaos symbol and Emerson Ryan-Litchfield, Vegas' LGS rep and early adopter of the 'check fives, take lives mantra'. Together we formed: The Hunt Is On.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Articles - A Decade Past: Attending my First UVS Event</image:title>
      <image:caption>Daniel was on Chaos Snake Man. One of the most frustrating decks I've ever had to play against. It broadcasts exactly what it is going to do to you, and is packed with just enough interaction to protect the combo. The looming threat of the greatest low-zone dispenser ever printed, Ura 121-Shiki Ama-No-Murakumo, gave this deck a sense of inevitability that didn't compromise it's early game power. One of the things I've grown to really appreciate about UVS in general.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Articles - A Decade Past: Attending my First UVS Event</image:title>
      <image:caption>Emerson was rocking one of the coolest and simplest characters I've ever seen in UVS, Life Pharaoh Man. I personally believe that control checks are one of the things that makes UVS stand alone in the card game realm where so many ccgs are simply "MTG but any card can be a land." or "MTG but you have a deck specifically for lands." or "MTG but you discard lands instead of tap them." Pharaoh Man was a seven hand size aggro deck with above average 'speed' and damage, bolstered by the truly outrageous value the Life symbol could generate. This deck was dunk after dunk after dunk and cards like Hedonist, KERSPLAT!! and Leona Blade made extended strings surprisingly easy.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Articles - A Decade Past: Attending my First UVS Event</image:title>
      <image:caption>I played Demitri 1 for this event as he was the strongest control character in the game. As with most of my decks around this time, it started as a silly idea to gain as much health as possible before being refined into something resembling a real deck through suggestions of the old heads via the now defunct Jasco forums. When I first sleeved up a Demitri I had no idea how powerful the First Form to flip a rival foundation was. I just knew I wanted to gain a whole bunch of health and my seven boxes of Darktalkers: Warriors of the Night granted me three Darkside Masters, Demitri's very necessary UR. Looking back I am thoroughly embarrassed by this decklist, but I remember how each and every one of these silly little one-ofs made the final cut. There is very few cards maxed out at 4 copies, which clashes heavily with my modern sensibilities.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Articles - A Decade Past: Attending my First UVS Event</image:title>
      <image:caption>One such matchup I can recall is versus James Stephens' Basilio San Juan deck. It topped teams and got ninth place in Singles. A deck that at first glance I viewed as a simply inferior version of the same Life Throws package my Demitri deck was playing. The extra consistency from the character's Form ability allowed him to play much better tech pieces in the mainboard however and I quickly found myself losing game one. The ability to start every turn with Kuuga (Yuri Chou Upper) to commit Demitri, and running additional copies of Athena's Knight and Peaceful Messenger that the Demitri decks couldn't afford to run was a real struggle. Luckily Bat Spin hammered home the five hand size problems in game two, and game three the difference was that I could keep my 8000 Degrees face up whereas he could not.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Articles - A Decade Past: Attending my First UVS Event</image:title>
      <image:caption>I also played against a B.B. Hood that was as aggro as you could get in this format. Fire Shield Ram decks were about the only thing that could hope to overcome the constant life gain of a Negative Stolen in the card pool; but with the caveat that anti-draw abilities served as a huge shut down to the strategy. My rival wasn't a consistent player of the game however and spent a lot of time in the round reading every card I played. This led us to a 1-1 draw and my team ended up with the win because Daniel was also in a 1-1 draw when time was called but Emerson had won his match in about 15 minutes total.</image:caption>

      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/67da2e953669b36869a5c323/fe927b18-1d64-495c-8913-d47cf198f3b3/Clark.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Articles - A Decade Past: Attending my First UVS Event</image:title>
      <image:caption>Clark was sort of a known quantity before this as a heavy hitting throw deck but what really made the deck pop was the recently released Darkstalkers starter decks featuring Ki Techniques. A card most players would recognize now as Setting the Record Straight. At the time, -2 damage to every single attack was incredibly punishing. My own Demitri deck was propped up essentially by -1 damage to everything with some additional offensive life gain. So Clark's Ability to draw a card every time he took damage and commit the rival out akin to Hood's response made for a pure slog. They needed this pairing pretty badly because his two teammates had LESS THAN TEN LOW BLOCKS BETWEEN THEM. To think that if our Snake Man could've preyed on the seven hand size decks with next to zero low protection it would've changed the course of UVS history forever is something I have to force myself not to think about.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Articles - A Decade Past: Attending my First UVS Event</image:title>
      <image:caption>Unfortunately we didn't know much about Saiki and thought we understood Athena as Shane Duckworth had provided us with a blueprint for the Silent Assassin "Railgun" build. We knew about Peaceful Messenger and Power Struggles as fairly common throw hate pieces on Death, so we figured Athena would struggle more with throws, and Saiki burning his low life total to generate assets would only help Pharaoh Man out. What followed is maybe the most stressful hour of UFS I've ever played in my life.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Articles - A Decade Past: Attending my First UVS Event</image:title>
      <image:caption>Emerson would not find a way to extend his costly attack lineup or dodge the many bad checks in his deck against Saiki once again. But I was doing a much better job at identifying the threats in the Assets Athena deck and despite losing game one, I had found an early groove in game two with an explosive double Darkside Master turn three kill. One thing to note about the Assets Athena deck was many many players tried to pick this deck up in the aftermath of 2016 World's and the general consensus was that it was incredibly clunky. Many top tier players could not navigate the mulligans and early turns of the deck and my one of Not Over Yet allowed me to take advantage of a rough start for Athena to steal a game going first.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Articles - Guest Cope: Variance is the Good Guy - The Sweeping Daggers Problem</image:title>
      <image:caption>So few of you softies have the gumption to run a 2 or a 1 check. In the past, your excuses for “safety threes” were vague and dumb: “What if I fail my first turn? Waah variance, stability blah blah blah”, and it was easy just to call you a bunch of wieners and move on with my day. But then, UVS Games handed you the excuse that you were looking for all along. That Sweeping Daggers gets to steal your built-in risk, risk free. It’s actively making me, a passionate lover of playable 1-checks, heartily re-consider my deck-building choices. For instance, take the card Zeru’s Flames. A card, that some could say, has the worst diff to check ratio in the game. But in Krista? That’s stun 4 on character before you even get to your foundation enhances. I’m out here thinking that’s a pretty fun, unexpected wall breaker.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/67da2e953669b36869a5c323/101e5813-c506-4a0b-8af9-0af5ca5ba4c1/Zerus.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Articles - Guest Cope: Variance is the Good Guy - The Sweeping Daggers Problem</image:title>
      <image:caption>Unfortunately, guess who uses my Zeru’s Flames better than I could ever dream? Any character on the air, death or void symbol. I’m not saying there isn’t counterplay, but to slot Zeru’s into my deck requires me to play the game knowing at any point, my turn could end. To slot Sweeping Daggers into an opponent’s deck, they simply open the sleeve and slide the card in. Why would anyone risk War Hammer Strike, when they get stun 3’d back as soon as they hit their worst check? How could you consider running Food Motivated – a high-risk card that can solve a draw-starved character’s resource problem, when it just gets slapped right back in your face?</image:caption>

      <image:caption>It didn’t win. Not even close. I made deck building mistakes (Charring Flurry? Momentum? WHAT WAS I THINKING AHHHHHHH) and many other non-bo’s. Check out the decklist here, and you’ll notice the symbol was changed from “Death” to “Barf” in the title, which honestly feels like the most accurate summary of my feelings.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Articles - ... So, You Built a Terrible Deck for Locals</image:title>
      <image:caption>Trying and failing is still trying. You walk away with real information. Maybe your deck blocked well, but never threatened damage. Maybe your foundation base was solid, but didn’t support the plan. You learn more from swinging and missing than from watching someone else hit the target. So why did I play Mina III? I wanted to see how Acid Screen and Acid Splash felt in case I wanted to jam some Bebop in the TMNT release. Acid Screen felt solid. Acid Splash, not so much. It didn’t play well in a deck that didn’t want to generate momentum in the first place. But at least now I know. If it ever comes up again, I’ve got real reps with Acid Splash. (It probably won’t ever come up again, I hate that card now, but still)</image:caption>

      <image:title>Articles - ... So, You Built a Terrible Deck for Locals</image:title>
      <image:caption>Your pile of jank becomes someone else’s matchup puzzle. Maybe your sequencing is strange just enough to make people pause. Even if you’re getting run over, your locals are getting valuable reps against something new. It reminds me of something from back in my competitive Magic days. I used to call it the, “Saffron Olive tier.” If you don’t know who that is, HEEE’S SETH, PROOOOBABLY BETTER KNOWN AS SAFFRON OLIVE. A man who made a name for himself piloting absolute nonsense, sometimes winning games with the thing that nobody expected. He has an entire series entitled “Against the Odds” which is achieving this exact goal.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Articles - ... So, You Built a Terrible Deck for Locals</image:title>
      <image:caption>Not everything in the pile is trash. Sometimes you’re halfway through a match, getting ready to chalk up another loss, and something actually clicks. A card overperforms. A strange line works. An interaction you only included because you thought it was funny ends up being weirdly relevant. You pause, stare at the board, and think, wait a second, is this actually kind of good? That’s the treasure hunt that makes brewing worth it. Most of the time you’re digging through cardboard garbage, but once in a while you hit on something worth keeping. A foundation that plays smoother than expected. An attack that hits harder than it reads. A defensive tool that makes more of a difference than you thought it would. Even if the deck is barely functional, little moments like that become part of your future builds.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/67da2e953669b36869a5c323/b4b6bdb7-5990-49d2-9a81-b59e94645ecf/AcidScreen.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Articles - ... So, You Built a Terrible Deck for Locals</image:title>
      <image:caption>It wasn’t Mina III. Let’s be clear about that. Mina III was a mess. But even in that mess, Acid Screen felt kind of good. It wasn’t enough to carry the whole thing, but it did make me rethink a little on how I process face down cards in a tight card pool. I would not play that deck again, but I would absolutely take what I learned from it into Bebop to try. Not Acid Splash though, maybe it’ll find a home someday, but likely not in my house. That’s what you’re really doing when you bring a disaster to locals. You’re digging. You’re testing. You’re hunting for something that might actually stick. And sometimes, even if the deck is terrible, you walk away with something worth keeping.</image:caption>

She might seem tricky at first glance due to the reveal cost, but here’s the trick. You can reveal face-up momentum. <image:caption>This card has been performing above expectations in testing across multiple decks. Frequently, we run into opponents with multiple copies of strong defensive pieces, especially those that we can’t interact with like Incubating. This card clears the way for just one turn, but sometimes that’s all you need to hit big. It also punishes decks that lean into deadlock or wall-building strategies. One well-timed hit can collapse a whole defense.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Articles - Regional Ramblings: The Setup - Beast Titan</image:title>
      <image:caption>Beast Titan is a deck that I’ve spent a ton of time on. It’s a powerful midrange deck that relies on cards like Beast Titan Attacks, Death Rattle, and Nine Titans from Throughout the Ages to either play sixteen damage throws and make your opponent deal with them or slowly burn them out with Death Rattle responses one health at a time. I always find myself going back to this character card. It’s a strange one for me because I’m not a fan of Attack on Titan as an IP. I never really felt good about any of the characters from the anime, and the story certainly didn’t resonate with me. I play Beast Titan because I enjoy drawing lots of cards and having multiple win conditions. I also think Backup strategies are very entertaining to play and offer a lot of depth to the game.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Articles - Regional Ramblings: The Setup - King Ghidorah, Emperor of the Cosmos</image:title>
      <image:caption>The preeminent control deck of the format. The Godzilla Challenger Series characters are very strong even five sets later. King Ghidorah uses his head counter mechanic to survive otherwise lethal damage, and cards like Nonagon, True 100% Unleashed, and Chronostasis Trigger control the pace of the game in a way that’s truly satisfying to play. When playing this deck it feels like there’s always a line for any situation. Being able to recur any card from your discard pile when you need it to block, or to advance your board state really allows King G to put up an almost impenetrable wall against your opponent. This is the deck that’s really at the top of my list, and while I have less time on it than the two other characters I have here, I believe I can pilot this list to a solid finish in Louisville.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Articles - Regional Ramblings: The Setup - Smiling Titan</image:title>
      <image:caption>Smiling Titan is a character that I shied away from precisely because she was at the top of charts when she was released. I wanted nothing to do with this character; however, once she got her errata I felt like I could finally play her. Smiling Titan post errata is still a very solid mid range deck utilizing the high difficulty titan attacks. Cards like Unexpected Outcomes, Ravages of War, and Beast Titan Attacks put up some strong offense with their high stat lines, and they all have extremely solid effects to boot. Combined with the new backup The Nine Titans from Throughout the Ages to double her attack’s damage or speed before piling on the massive stats from her own enhance allow her to put out some truly terrifying numbers. All of this coupled with great defensive foundations like Desperate Struggle, Invincible Body, Frantic Rescue, and Keiko’s Aid make this mid-range deck a force to be reckoned with.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Articles - Ms. Leonhart, Or: How I Learned to Stop Whining and Embrace the Meta (Part 5) - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>This was not what I expected. Over the last few weeks, I've been working on this Annie list and playing games as much as my free time would allow for. I missed our weekly locals last week because I was busy answering hot questions and eating even hotter wings at my Hot Ones-themed birthday party (it was a blast, by the way). I went into this weekly tournament with no expectations of how I would do, because testing was a little mixed so far. During the past week, I went 1-2 into Richard's Hange Zoe list, with games going to turn 3 every time. I managed to eke out a 2-1 set against my nemesis Rodan with turn 5 wins. We ran one game into Eren Yeager, Usurper, which I won on turn 4 before I had to attend some work meetings. I also had some matches against Armin Arlert, Power of the Colossus, Mollymauk, and Falco Grice, which ended up with a positive record for me. Overall in games, I was at nine wins and four losses, with a turn four average win turn. In the games I won, I felt in control; in the ones I lost, I felt powerless. I've been taking my notes, writing down my comments, concerns, worries and wonders. With each game I've been feeling a bit more confident and feeling the urge to change the decklist less and less. There was one final change I felt I needed to the attack line-up, one that I initially resisted because it felt too obvious: I needed Vast Hybrid Chimera Kraken. Kraken's been in basically all my decks since I bought the cards. It offers a high level of value with the commit and freeze enhance, the commit an asset enhance, great base stats and a playable enhance while in momentum. It's just a GREAT card and is especially valuable in a meta where assets have a ton of power and it's crucial to control tempo. I slotted three in to go with my three Seafood Sluggers and went to locals. The Coping with Cardboard locals has a wide variance of decks, from people bringing "haha funny" stuff to competitive, regional-hopeful lists. We have a big event coming up in June, the StarkDark Open Series, so people are starting to bring more competitive decks to try and get their testing in. My three opponents for locals this week were a mix of the two categories, which led to some very fun games. Let's get into the report.</image:caption>
